CHAPTER FIFTEEN

In the aftermath of yet another attack everyone sat around the dining table and breakfast bar eating a dinner that Reijo had rustled up for all of us. I looked around at how busy my kitchen was compared to normal.

My human friend didn’t need to be here, but even James sat down with Douglas and Naomi. It seemed fitting to have him here, and he’d become friends with Douglas very swiftly.

Scarlet was growing restless, that much was obvious, and I suspected she had something she wanted to say that I was going to have to listen to. Thankfully, she didn’t waste any time getting to it. As soon as we had all finished eating, she got to her feet and drew all the attention to her.

“I know it’s not entirely my place to decide what happens here, but I know many of you are restless, in awe of Artemisia’s ability to have held this place single-handedly and wanting to continue fighting anything that poses a threat to our planet, so... Artemisia? What can we do to help?”

I almost dropped my fork at the question and the way it was phrased. She was asking me what to do instead of trying to push her own agenda or desires. It was a change in demeanor and I wasn’t sure what to respond with.

Sitting back, I considered it. Ranoctil still hadn’t turned up to aid me and I was in a completely new situation, one that no one had foreseen or given me a plan for. Whatever I did now, it was likely to be up to me to make it work for some time.

“I’m honestly not sure. I need to hold this place steady, but I admit, I want to know what changed and if there is more to worry about.”

“Go through the portal?” Scarlet asked. “Take the fight to them?”

I considered her words. It hadn’t been what I’d meant when I had spoken, but it was an interesting question. Could we go through the portal? I didn’t know, but it hadn’t been where I was going.

“For now, I was thinking of the handler, but I won’t deny that I want to try and discourage the corruption from ever coming here again. It is tough to fight an age in one place and not wonder if something can be done to stop it altogether.” As I spoke I shrugged. And then I thought about it even more. I liked the idea of taking the fight to the corruption off-planet.

“If we did go to another planet, are there enough dragons we could leave behind to protect this place? I cannot abandon my post without knowing that Earth will be safe.”

Scarlet considered it for a moment, but eventually nodded. She pulled out more batteries from her pack and placed them down on the counter. “I can ask plenty of dragons and humans to hold the fort and leave them with more than enough magic to hold off attacks, but with any good fortune it wouldn’t come to that.
